True Charity is the philosophy that guides how FlourishNow helps those in need.
Our mission is to provide assistance to those in need in a way that helps them realize their God-given potential through work and healthy relationships – ultimately reducing long-term government and private charity dependence.
We believe for charity to be True Charity, it cannot trap those we serve in dependence or isolation, but instead it must draw them into healthy relationships that encourage growth, restore dignity through work, and ultimately strengthen families and communities.
For charity to be fair and just, it must be voluntary. In James 1:27, we're given clear guidelines on how to help those in need. "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you." These acts of love are to be done out of obedience to God and love for our neighbor, not through legislation, confiscation, or other coercive means.
God did not create us to experience life alone, and when crisis strikes, many turn to family and the Church for support. But for millions of Americans those safety nets are non-existent, and instead, they turn to government welfare to meet their needs. We believe that long-term dependence robs individuals of their dignity and isolates people from the very community needed to help discover their God-given potential. FlourishNow enters into relationship with those we serve by calling them to accountability, self-sufficiency, and eventually, giving charitably themselves.
Grounded in Faith
For charity to be voluntary and relational, it must be grounded in faith. The words "charity" and "love" are interchangeable in scripture. Charity, if not love in itself, is the act of love in tangible ways. In Corinthians 13:7 we're told that, "Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance." If our charity is to be grounded in love, it means we believe one's future is better and more hopeful than dependency. Charity given without faith and without hope will adversely affect anyone's resolve to continue helping the poor. Faith that God has a beautiful plan for everyone leads us to believe that a person can rise from poverty and is the basis for all we do.
